Learn about your rights
We are delivering workshops on rights and self-advocacy for consumers of mental health and wellbeing services and their supporters. The workshops cover your rights under the Mental Health and Wellbeing Act 2022 as well as IMHA’s 6-step self-advocacy model.
You might be interested in attending if you answer ‘yes’ to any of these questions:

- Are you a carer or supporter who would like to help others to self-advocate?
In-person workshops
We are running workshops across the state in person. To find out if there is a session coming up near you, please email workshops@imha.vic.gov.au and tell us:

Learn about the principles
The Mental Health and Wellbeing Act 2022 has principles that all mental health staff, allied health staff and mental health services should consider when making decisions about people’s care, treatment or assessment.

eLearn – Principles in Practice for mental health and wellbeing workforce
The eLearn module has been designed to increase your understanding of the 13 Mental Health and Wellbeing principles.
The learning objectives of the eLearn are to:
- Learn about what the Mental Health and Wellbeing principles are
- Explain the value of putting these principles into practice
- Discover how to apply these principles
- Reflect on your practice.
The module will take about 45 mins to complete.
Workshops – Implementing Principles in Practice
We are delivering workshops on the 13 Mental Health and Wellbeing principles in the Act.
The learning objectives of the workshop are:
- analyse current practices in relation to these principles.
- reflect on ways of working to best apply principles in your local services.
- produce and elicit evidence of principle consideration, balance and application.
We are currently offering these workshops to the medical workforce under the Mental Health and Wellbeing Act 2022. More information on the upcoming workshops is in the next section.

Workshops for medical workforce
The workshop was developed with guidance from lived and living experience experts, psychiatrists and The Office of the Chief Psychiatrist (OCP).
This specialised workshop aims to provide medical workforce who work under the Mental Health and Wellbeing Act 2022 with practical information on the principles and an opportunity for professional development through reflective discussions and peer learning.
The workshops are co-facilitated by:
- Wanda Bennetts (Senior Consumer Consultant at IMHA)
- Associate Professor Lee Allen (Deputy Chief Psychiatrist at OCP).
